[Rhodes22-list] Raven Energy Budget II

Peter,

I don't have time right now, so please excuse the brusque (Meltzer?) answer.

Based on my actual experience with the Link-10 there is no way this
chart is even close to actual experience. To take an easy example--we
don't carry enough water on board to use a freshwater pump for 6 hours a
day. Everything else falls into essentially the same category.

When I turn on all my cabin lights--for no good reason, just to test,
and leave my stereo on all the time, and burn as much electricity as I
can, I rarely use more than 15 amp hours in any given 24 hour period.
But, in fact, I don't sail in order to read. I like to preserve my
night vision at night, and generally burn red leds--which require only a
pitiful amount of electricity.

I'm with Wally on this deep cycle, starter battery, switch crap. It
simply doesn't apply to us. KISS!!!! I have never ever come close to a
problem, and if I ever did I could always start my engine manually. The
engine would then run my anchor lights or any other critical component.
(PS -- I don't use anchor lights most of the time in designated
anchorages--they are not required.--When I do use them, I again use LEDs.

Even if it were possible to draw 41.5 amps a day through our equipment,
that does not mean you need a minimum of 83 amps of battery rating per
day. ("Don't draw down more than 50%...etc.") You are piling one idiot
factor on top of the next, using rules of thumb that are just plain
wrong as regards our electricity usage on our boats.

Basically you've either got to spring for a Link-10 to see what's really
going on, or believe Wally who correctly understands all of this stuff
intuitively. All the rest is throwing out good money that would much
better be spent elsewhere.

I'm with Wally on AGM batteries, too. Batteries are all made by the
same small group of manufacturers. They are all good. The cheapest are
the best value.

The only wild card is an auto tiller which I have not tested, which does
use a lot of electricity in a way that can sap batteries.
