[Rhodes22-list] BR Frame Material

Dave,

Of course, I don't really know the answers. I'm just imagining the
problems.

As we used to say when we were kids, if this rig fell on you "it
wouldn't tickle".

There is no question you could build a rig that will stay up when the
water is calm and the wind isn't blowing.

But would you want your daughter under something you had to worry about
all the time?

When the main sail sail is unfurled, the mast supports the boom. Leave
the topping lift slack.

As I understand this boom room, it is supported by the topping lift. If
the line pops out of the cleat, the whole thing comes crashing down. If
wind gets under it from one side, could it pop the yoke off the
boom?...and come crashing down?

The more mass it has, the greater the danger. If the whole thing is
made of PVC and nylon and it falls down, it's just funny, not dangerous.

Carbon fiber is light, but it ain't cheap.

Aluminum is a compromise...

Slim's BR seems to be attached to the frame with Velcro straps. If we
made pockets in the panels, and slipped the frame into the pockets, you
would never even see what the frame was made of. I haven't thought
through the physics, but I wouldn't be surprised if you could leave most
or all of the frame inside the pockets all the time, and lock them upon
assembly. Storage space would be little more than storage space for the
frame itself.

But...when you put the topping lift under tension it hums. This can get
quite annoying. If the rig weighs a lot, it may be tough to get the hum
out of the supporting lines...

Just imagining. Keep thinking. More to come.
