Mark,
Follow Rummy's recommendations for a combination depth gauge and
fish finder. Just have a current fishing license, pole and bait. When the
wind drops off, no problem just whip out the pole and spend a few minutes
fishing rather than cranking up the motor.
The hand held GPS is more versatile than a built in unit. While the
screen may not be big, it is big enough for the basic information. It also
allows you to take it home and download your trip to your computer for
future trip planning. Or, if you get out hiking, the new GPS's actually
work in the mountains. And, you can take it in your car.
I have the Magellan Color GPS and it does all the above quite well.
You can also get a DC adapter to plug into the cigarette socket.
Why are you so reticent about developing the skills to research the
archives? Learning those skills might be transferable to other problems
that you may encounter. Did you read the addendum I posted to Todd Z:
"Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you
feed him for a lifetime." Proverb
