I heave to a lot.  I often sail alone and it frees me up to do anything away
from the helm, especially reefing.  I haven't tried it in anything like 40
but I've been under full sail in 20 heaving to without problem.  ...Reefing
in as fast as I can but no problem.  8-)  Like others have said, I just tack
but don't cut the jib sheet,  Slack main sheet and take the helm to the lee.
Voilå!  Fast and easy.  Getting underway is even easier.  Cut the windward
jib sheet and take on the other side, sheet in the main and steer away.  But
you can't heave to for long where I sail--forget about riding out the storm.
You'd have to anchor or sail or motor.
