[Rhodes22-list] Furler repairs :was Scott and Detached Furlers

Art,

I would have to measure to give you the total length of the furler. The
repair was not difficult at all and took less than an hour. I guess
aluminum tubing would work for a repair, but I have plenty of the SS
stuff on hand and it is stronger.

First, I had to remove the forestay (or at least pull it far enough up
inside to clear the area to be cut out) to avoid damaging the stay during
cutting and drilling. The bushing at the bottom of the furler was so far
gone that it crumbled when I tried to get it out.....hence the improvised
new bushing. The proper way to make a new bushing would be to buy UHMW
rod that is 1 1/2" in diameter and turn it down on a lathe, creating a
flange. I put the furler on saw horses and marked the outside limits of
the damaged area to be removed, and made my cut marks. Before cutting, I
laid the piece of SS along side and transferred the cut marks. I
measured the cut out section, just to have a reference in cast my lines
were accidently rubbed off of the SS (Sharpie markers do not stay well on
the SS). I cut the SS off leaving 1 1/2" outside of my marks, then cut
the furler and removed the damaged section.

The SS was a very tight fit inside the aluminum tube, but a few minutes
sanding with emery cloth had the SS going inside with slight effort. A
helper was needed to hold the furler when I inserted the SS tube and
tapped it in with a mallet and block of wood, until the cut line was even
with the end of the furler. The bottom spool end was put on and driven
up to the other mark. Holes were center-punched, drilled and pop riveted.

pic attached.

  Todd,
What total length is the composite furler you repaired? You must
have had fits drilling the holes in the inserted SS tubing. Would
1" aluminum tubing not worked? Very clever way to repair your
  furler tube.
