Dave,
As long as you are looking around, check the size of this lake:
http://www.sas.usace.army.mil/lakes/thurmond/
And there is a big 'Retirement' called Savannah Lakes:
http://www.ahn9.com/savannahlakes/outside_frame.asp
Contrary to the Corps of Engineers home page on this lake, it is not
busy. If you want to stay on he lake during the off season, Hickory Knob
State Park in South Carolina is near the Savannah Lakes place. Also, if you
are a potential buyer, Savannah Lakes will wine and dine you in addition to
putting you up for a night. Might be worth checking out. They have been
known to fly serious prospects in.
Those serious prospects are those whose net worth make the price of plane
ticket seem like pocket change. I know of such a prospect they flew in and
set up his tee time to boot.
As to the sailing around Amelia Island, actually it is quite good
for a Rhodes on the north side. Just have to watch out for Submarines.
This place has a ramp:http://www.ameliaisland.com/attract.htm#HARBOR
Have you been to Panama City, Florida. Port St. Joe has a nice
marina. St. Joe Bay is a lot of water. Quite shallow for big boats, but
sailable for a center board boat. And, the Gulf is generally quite nice in
this area, not like the Atlantic. Check out this place:

What is all this talk about the south? Go North to Lake
Champlain. Just do not go on a cheap tour boat. And, know the rules for
sailing to Canada. No crowds on this lake.
