Folks,

We are still trying to sort out all the features of our refurbished R22, one
of those features is a Kenyon 23000B butane stove in the galley. In poking
around the internet to find out how to operate the beaste I discovered that
Kenyon initiated a recall for that particular stove at the behest of the
Consumer Product Safety Commission back in 2001. Something about the valve not
regulating the flow of butane if it get’s hot. A few people have been hurt -
at least 1 badly - and there have been some fires as a result of the fuel
non-regulation issue.

I called Kenyon (866-585-7377) to find out whether the recall affected our
stove. I gave the Kenyon lady the serial number of our stove and she asked me
to send the stove back to them, at my expense, and they will provide a
replacement, at their expense. She told me the problem occurs when the removable
grate for the stove is used upside down. Apparently heat is reflected into
the fuel valve assembly, the heat changes the tolerance of things, and the
valve can leak. Kenyon has redesigned the grate on their replacement stove so
that it can’t be mis-installed. I have no idea at this point whether the
new stove will fit in the same footprint as the old stove, it might.

If you have a Kenyon 23000 B stove aboard your boat you might already be
aware of the above.

Dave
