Brad,
   Could it be the engine pump wasn't installed properly after the first overhaul?  I had that happen to on a engine I worked on.  We didn't quite get the fuel pump right.  It looked ok, but wouldn't work.  Once we took it off and reinstalled it, it worked fine.  Other considerations would be vapour lock, contamination, temporary line blockage.  You guys probably know more about it than I do.  Be careful, you can't just pull over ; ' ).
