Thank you for your reply. It puts a more accurate measurement on the
trip. Now let me ask three additional questions:

First, how fast could the trip be made without sight seeing? Second,
could you make the trip be made under sail or without a motor. And, what
ever happened to you drinking buddy, Steve M?

Ed - I wouldn't try such a trip without a reliable outboard - we have a
Yamaha 8 / 4 stroke. The gas tank holds six gallons, and we refueled about every
other day. So that gives you an idea - we motorsailed a good bit - the Bay
ain't trade wind territory. I would describe our trip as two-thirds passage
and one-third cruise. We did try to keep moving under all conditions. My
"deal" with the first mate was that we would pull into a marina each night, so
that she could get off the boat .walk around, use the showers, etc. Thus, if
we had chosen to sail through the night, the trip could have been made in a
bit less than half the time. Also, we knew that going thru the Dismal Swamp
Canal would essentially cost a day's time, as the locking schedule is pretty
limited and so you pretty much have to tie up overnight at the Visitor's
Center once in the Canal - it's worth it, by the way.
My buddy Steve Mutart has retired and is building a house on the water
at Marco Island. I have told him that he needs to have a Rhodes at his slip,
but he's been non-committal. I expect to see him this week (they are
cleaning out their stuff and hauling all to FL). He's getting involved with the
environmentalists down there, doing some good things.
