Mine too and I have a 3500 GMC Duramax.  Even that has a lock out for
overdrive.

Chet,
Look in your owners manual, it will recommend towing in 4th with a five
speed tranny. My automatic tranny has a lockout for locking out the direct
drive
when I'm towing a heavy load.
