[Rhodes22-list] Life Lines

I agree that the stays should be the primary handhold for adults walking
forward. I also have the lifelines.

The class of sub I was on was equipped with forward and after escape trunks
to allow from crew escape from disabled subs from a depth of several hundred
feet. We always showed them to visiting moms "..see we can escape..."

We didn't tell them that nobody had done this successfully since 1939, or
that you would only be in water shallow enough to allow it at all maybe 10%
of the time.

My wife wanted lifelines to feel better about taking my little ones (2 and
5) out on the boat. The boys never leave the cockpit, and wear harnesses
and tethers at all times underway. We never *rely* on the lifelines, but it
makes you feel better, they are worth something.

I considered, but did not spring for the rails.

Another topic, IMO, if you are on a mooring, you will need a solar panel to
maintain your battery.

Nan,
I have to agree with Dan in the lifelines. It is mighty nice to be able to
use them for a steady hold in addition to the stays. I have never had
difficulty with them. Most who are aboard take the extra caution boarding
that should be used in any case. If necessary, they can be loosened, even
removed. All of this detail could make your head spin. Tell us, how much
experience have you had sailing? Have a nice Thanksgiving.
