[Rhodes22-list] PHRF and get togethers

Dave,

The basic assumption of PHRF is that all boats are sailed by expert skippers
and that all boats are optimized for racing. Think about that and let it
sink in for just a moment...

Local committees are tasked with the job of re-rating boats to adjust them
for "local conditions", usually based upon the protests, requests or
complaints of the losers, to make everyone as happy as possible and to
generate a general feeling that everyone has an equal chance to win on any
given day. It's a racing system that has more to do with political
correctness and allowing all to participate than it does with determining
who the best skipper is. So it's possible that Roger P sailing in Arkansas
could get down-rated to 240 and Bob Dilk could be rated 276 by NC PHRF and
both ratings could be correct, although both had similar standard mast R22
Continentals. So if the boats aren't really equal and the skippers also
aren't really both equally expert, it's got to be the rating that's going to
give. It's winning that kills you in PHRF.

One-Design is a much better system, but, in most cases, it's more difficult
to get everyone to show up with the same kind of boat. Is anyone interested
is starting up the Rhodes 22 one-design class association at US Sailing?

-------------------------------------------------------

It seems there is not a lot of interest from the disparate group of R22
sailors on this board in all getting together in one spot at the same time.
Why not let's have a bunch of regional meet ups?

Elle could host the Lower Cheaspeake, Mary Lou and Fred could host the Upper
Cheaspeake, I would be happy to organize a trip from Blackbeard Sailing
Club in New Bern to either Cape Lookout or Ocracoke, Kentucky Lake etc,
Rummy's lake etc, etc. etc. Each could advertize a date and see who comes.

Is anyone interested in this idea?

PT
