Even in small concentrations, hydrogen is very dangerous and should be
vented during charging.  The most amazing myth concerning hydrogen gas
buildup is that no ventilation is required when a "maintenance free" or
"sealed" lead acid design is selected.  The fact is that in NORMAL OPERATION
the hydrogen gas produced by the charging process is recombined (AGM style
maintenance free batteries) or is not released, in the case of sealed cells,
UNLESS PRESSURE BUILDS UP CAUSING VENTING.  For more info, please check out

Mike,
I've never considered the gas released by a battery charging to be enough
of a hazard to worry about.
