Lou,

It is good to see your post and question. Where have you been? There
are now several guys rebuilding Rhodes 22 or Continentals. They do not know
that you are our reigning guru!

I have replaced the cockpit drain in my boat. Bob's description is similar
to my experience. His recommendations as to sealant softening agents sounds
good. I would add some stuff called 'debond it'. It was alleged to soften
5200. What ever you choose to use, and you may choose to use all, it is a
slow job. When I got everything cleaned up, I had to rebuild the
base/floor. I used several layers of glass and epoxy. I gel coated the
cockpit floor. I obtained a two inch thru hull that has one flaten side to
fit against the laz wall and is much flatter than what was in there. I used
a 2 inch hole saw to make a neat hole for the thru hull fitting.

Then when I tried to connect the tubing, I discovered that it is not a
straight shot but off set at least 1/2 to 3/4 inches. So whatever tubing
you choose, make sure that it is flexible. I used regular flexible plastic
plumbing tubing from Home Depot. I put the tubing on both fittings before I
installed the new cockpit drain fitting. I double clamped the tubing to
each fitting.

If you use a new fitting there is an angle of the cockpit floor does not
allow the new screw fitting the bottom to tighten flush. So before
installing new tubing make a wedge of the correct angle to make a tight
fitting and install before putting drain fitting together with the tubing.

Bob,

If you go back to the ‘Ask’ web site that I posted therein was a reference
to a site that had a diagram of cabin stringers with the correct
measurements for a Rhodes 22. I would think that if you followed the
diagram and measurements you would get the correct hull shape. You might
have to somehow contract or form the hull to tab these stringers. You might
need a large tie down strap with a ratchet to bring the hull to fit.

Now you rarely see posts by the original designer of these pictures. Today
was one of those rare days that he posted of all things a comment on ‘Don
Imus’.
