Heat brings warnings for seniors, people, 'with lung problems

By Liv Osby' HEALTH WRITER losby at greenvillenews.com
With the mercury expected to hit a blistering 102 degrees today, another
ozone alert is predicted for parts of the state and senior citizens are
being cautioned about heat-related illnesses.

Wednesday's high reaches a sweltering 104, tying the all time high at
Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport and breaking the old record for
the day of 98, 'set in 1951, said National Weather Service meteorologist
Bryan McAvoy. .

Tuesday's high of 100 also broke a record for the day of 99 set in 1935, he
said. And with a predicted high of 102, today is expected to be just as
sweltering.

And so the Lieutenant Governor's Office on Aging also has cautioned senior
citizens to be careful.
"Older adults are more vulnerable to extreme heat," said David Lucas, Office
on Aging spokesman. "People should pay attention to the' forecast and take
common sense measures on days where the heat is going to be extremely high."
People should stay indoors in the air conditioning during the heat of the
pay, drink plenty of fluids, wear lightweight clothing arid avoid
overexertion. .

Lucas also encourages people to check on elderly neighbors and relatives to
make sure they are ill right during a heat wave. The state Department of
Health and Environmental Control is forecasting an ozone action day for
Aiken, Barnwell, Edgefield, McCormick and Saluda counties. Harmful ozone
forms when chemicals from vehicle exhaust, industry and commercial processes
such as power plants and dry cleaners react with sunlight and heat. It is
worst on hot, sunny days, and can make 'it hard" for some people to breathe.
Most at risk are people with conditions, such as asthma, emphysema and
chronic bronchitis. And during high ozone levels, DHEC advises active'
people with respiratory problems to limit outdoor exertion. To learn more
