Hi

Does anyone have any info on used boat trailers? I am in the market for a trailer for a small keelboat (unfortunately not a Rhodes--someday.) The boat is a 15 foot Bullseye.

Thanks,
Lou

Rob
I have a Dodge Dakota pick up and in the manual they call for 10% .So how
hard is to get 350-450 lb,s on the tongue ? Is there a way of getting it close
before you pull out of the water?
Stan will help me when I pick up my boat , however can one person do it by
himself? The web sit had lot's of info but I don't think it will take one of
there scales .

Bill,
Somewhere between enough to keep the boat from fishtailing when trailering
(too light) and from overloading the rear of the towing vehicle (too much).
Seriously, I know this has been discussed and don't recall the numbers. I
know it on my vehicle when I see it. Anyone recall that discussion (yes, I
know you can search the archives, but I did and didn't find it). During
that discussion, I bookmarked this web site. I believe there a couple of
people who use this scale. But it's more than you want to know about
towing. But based on my single axle trailer and a 3500 pound boat (+/-),
about 350-400 pounds??

Peter,
I hope those guys did make it back safely. Looks like there is not much
tongue weight if any on the ball. The boat looks like it perched right at
the center of gravity. - rob

Hey elle, thanks for the heads up. We need people to keep us in touch
with the outside world. In any event we took a drive and here she is
just north of Tolchester Beach and south of Pooles Island. While we
were there she fired up the engines and was moving forward and
reverse but not going anywhere.

We had a report from a friend of an icebreaker going north. There was
another barge up around Poole's Island with a tug and one other
vessel (maybe the icebreaker) moving around so maybe a rescue was in progress.

In any event not how I'd like to spend a Tuesday afternoon - marooned
in a bunch of ice on a tug going nowhere.

Mary Lou

Got this from my sister last week. Sis and I don't agree on much but every
now and then she sends me a "zinger".

Sis got this one right! Life IS interesting!

Brad

An interesting twist for George Carlin.....I rarely forward these chain
letters but it is certainly one that makes you stop and think!!! I was
somewhat amazed by the author, unfortunately his wife recently passed
away.

 ------------------------------

GEORGE CARLIN (His wife recently died...)

Isn't it amazing that George Carlin - gross and mouthy comedian of the
70's and 80's - could write something so very eloquent..and so very
appropriate.

A wonderful Message by George Carlin:

The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but
shorter tempers, wider Freeways , but narrower viewpoints. We spend
more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses
and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more
degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts,

yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness.

We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too
little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too
tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom. We have
multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much,
love too seldom, and hate too often.

We've learned how to make a living, but not a life. We've added years to

life not life to years. We've been all the way to the moon and back, but

have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor. We conquered
outer space but not inner space. We've done larger things, but not
better things

We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul. We've conquered the
atom, but not our prejudice. We write more, but learn less. We plan
more, but accomplish less. We've learned to rush, but not to wait. We
build more computers to hold more information, to produce more

copies than ever, but we communicate less and less.

These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small
character, steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the days
of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes. These

are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one
night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from
cheer, to quiet, to kill. It is a time when there is much in the
showroom window and nothing in the stockroom. A time when technology can

bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share

this insight, or to just hit delete..

Remember; spend some time with your loved ones, because they are not
going to be around forever.

Remember, say a kind word to someone who looks up to you in awe, because

that little person soon will grow up and leave your side.

Remember, to give a warm hug to the one next to you, because that is the

only treasure you can give with your heart and it doesn't cost a cent.

Remember, to say, "I love you" to your partner and your loved ones, but
most of all mean it. A kiss and an embrace will mend hurt when it comes
from deep inside of you.

Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday that person
will not be there again.

Give time to love , give time to speak! And give time to share the
precious thoughts in your mind.

AND ALWAYS REMEMBER:

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the
moments that take our breath away.

If you don't send this to at least 8 people....Who cares?

George Carlin

Have a nice day, unless you already have other plans.

Robert,

I did the homework. Frankly, Carlin probably didn't write it. You can find
a number of other sources that quote he did write it, or didn't. That
doesn't change the value of the message. I haven't been to a Sunday sermon
in thirty years because I had a 'rats ass' interest in the message, but a
pastor friend of mine is preaching on 'Carlins' message next Sunday and I
promised to be there. What part of the message do you disagree with?

Brad

Bill D:

First, relax, you can move a Rhodes 22 on a trailer in the wrong
position resulting in wrong tongue weight. The only issues are at what
speed. If it is more than a couple of inches off, you just have to be
carefull over 70 mph and going down hill. If you go 55 you just do not have
the problems.
If you are going to Edenton to get your boat, ask that Elton be there,
he moves more boats and goes more distant places than Stan does these days.
The correct tongue weight is a variable. Older boats, that is
recycled weigh less than brand new boats, therefore need less tongue weight.
The kind and size of the motor are factors. I have an 8 hp 2 cycle Tohotsu
and it only weighs 60 pounds. I can move it myself. If you get a 9.9 four
stoker, it takes two people to move and affect tongue weight more if you
leave it on. So if you have the heavier motor you have to have the boat
more foreward.
Yes, you can launch and retrieve a Rhodes 22 by yourself. It is just
faster and easier with two. Especially when one of the helpers is Rummy.
Now if you really want to know the answers, look here:

Brad -

My question was not and is not hostile to you.

The message's impact suffered from the lack of proper attribution.
I would have a hard time warming to someone preaching on an
incompletely researched quotation. I also understand the difficulty
of accomplishing it when you have to develop a new argument for
right action on a weekly schedule.

As to the content of the message, it is a good summary of the
adverse progression of so many trends in our society. If I were
going to preach on it, I would immediately point out that the core
of the message transcends its shabby treatment as it passed through
the Internet. The self-serving twisting of messages by your next
door neighbor and prominent politicians is yet another symptom
of a growing disdain for truth.

Deliberately changing an attribution to reflect well or poorly on
someone is a form of theft, and a lie to boot. I have a respect
for accuracy, and this message is tainted.

Nothing about this is directed at you personally.

Pax,
/Robert

Robert,

Not a bad approach, I'll pass your thoughts on to Warner and he'll
give/remove credit where it is due. Inspiration comes from strange places.
Who would think that a minister would want to hang with me for sermon
ideas? Then again, hard to preach against sinners if you don't have
exposure to the problem.

Brad

Mary Lou,

Great picture! What luck you were able to get a shot
of it. Judging from the weather reports for the next
36 hrs., it may not be the last barge spending some
time admiring the Eastern shore. ;^)

As busy as it can get at the marina (BOY was it
cold!..did I say that yet?? ;^) it is always
interesting to flip over to 22A & listen to the
securite alerts. Once in a while there is a good one
like this.

Thanks for going out & getting this one!

elle

That was typical Carlin...but w/o the bite.

It's amazing how one's outlook on life changes when
the most important part of it isn't there any more.

These things he says are true. If your loved one were
to be gone tomorrow, what would be one thing you'd
regret not having done or said?

Do it now. Regrets don't go away.

Bill,
Stan is the master at getting the boat out of the water. If you want a chuckle,
ask him about recovering the boat after the Annapolis show, on Spa Creek. He
will be able to get the boat placement correct on the trailer.

Philip,

If you're interested in lessons, check out:

http://www.usna.edu/MWR/programs.htm 410.293.2058/3731

The Annapolis Navy Station isn't too far of a drive for you and they
offer the US Sailing Basic Keelboat Course for $165 (you'll need your
military ID). Classroom Friday night; in water lessons with the
instructor all day Saturday; and in water "test" with students only all
day Sunday (everyone passes). After completing the course, you'll be
able to rent the Naval Academy's old student knockabouts (Rainbow24s),
other small sailboats, and some Boston Whalers. Lessons and rentals are
about half the price of non-military facilities, and it's tough to beat
the location. Note that there may already be a waiting list for some
2007 sailing courses.

Good luck!

Lately I have been busy. I have been avoiding most of the political
clap
trap so I haven't posted as much. We (Deena and I) are debating whether
to
keep the loaner
another year or just jump into the new boat now. The loaner needs some
work
if we use it another season, so we have to plan a trip to Edenton. We
are
planning to take lessons for certification this spring when the weather
is
warmer.

What part of the message do you disagree with?

I disagree with most of it and I don't care who wrote it. Life's just not
that crappy. At least not for me. (OK, maybe I do drink and smoke too much
but I'm working on that.) Read it again and tell me that describes you in
your world. If it does then you really do need to get to church--or
something.

Here's something more helpful. I'm not a Buddhist but the words of the Dali
Lama always resonate for me. And this really is by the Dali Lama but go
ahead and spend your time looking it up if you need to:

 INSTRUCTIONS FOR LIFE

 1. Take into account that great love and great achievements involve great
risk.
 2. When you lose, don't lose the lesson.
 3. Follow the three R¹s:

Respect for self
 Respect for others and
 Responsibility for all your actions.

 4. Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke
of luck.
 5. Learn the rules so you know how to break them properly.
 6. Don't let a little dispute injure a great friendship.
 7. When you realize you've made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct
it.
 8. Spend some time alone every day.
 9. Open your arms to change, but don't let go of your values.
 10. Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.
 11. Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and think back,
you'll be able to enjoy it a second time.
 12. A loving atmosphere in your home is the foundation for your life.
 13. In disagreements with loved ones deal only with the current situation.
Don't bring up the past.
 14. Share your knowledge. It's a way to achieve immortality.
 15. Be gentle with the earth.
 16. Once a year, go someplace you've never been before.
 17. Remember that the best relationship is one in which your love for each
other exceeds your need for each other.
 18. Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it.
 19. Approach love and cooking with reckless abandon.

Please continue the dialogue going, as it's very comforting at the moment
but...

We are ashore, in the care of the Red Cross at the moment. Aside from the
adrenalin rush and some bruises from being knocked around, we are entirely
fine physically. Mentally we're more than bummed, as you can guess.

Until salvage operations commence, which due to the weather (the main
contributing factor to our blowing off course) won't be until tomorrow
morning at the earliest, we won't know the realities. At a minimum, since
the boat will be taken to Marathon, we could use some temporary hospitality
there.

There are definitely breaches in the starboard hull but the boat is very
high and dry at the moment, on its side. We don't know what the pounding
which caused a lot of flexing inside may have done to the bulkheads and
tabbing, but the reefer and settee and engine mounts were all moving notably
- not a really good sign. If there is any good news, the water was so
shallow that it never got to the floorboards, even with the very severe
heel, and when I went around shutting the through-hulls, I never got my
hands wet. So, with any luck, the damage is mostly above the water line,
presumed somewhat simpler to address and less likely to affect the integrity
of the hull. None the less, it's certain we'll be some months, if ever,
before we are back aboard, our only home, with every possession in the
world, having given away our car the day we left.

At any event, we can still be reached via email, when we have access, which
will persist until tonight, at the Red Cross, and then at the Days Inn in
KWW, we expect, where we'll be for the next three days. After that, we're
truly homeless (does being in the RC or a Days Inn relieve us from
homelessness? The boat was our entire world - our home and every single
possession)...

In any case, thank you for your prayers and thoughts. We're physically well,
and mental basket cases, though we are managing to get things done. More as
we know more. Feel free to pass this around to other lists on which we
participate, as you may be aware if you're on them, too, from having seen
our posts in those. Right now we're a bit busy to do that ourselves...

Captain Rummy:

All Slim said was, "OK, maybe I do drink and smoke too much
but I'm working on that." He did not say he was quiting. However, he is
getting older and maybe wiser? Maybe he is questioning the effect of second
hand smoke at home? Having seen what I have seen in the medical field and
knowing the influence of the the Tobacco industry, I am willing to bet that
there is a significant correlation between second hand smoke and breast
cancer. However, that study will never be done. So maybe Slim is just
thinking outloud.

Slim -

I love the sentiments in your contribution, and agree
that they are much more positive than the piece falsely
attributed to George Carlin - but:

Sorry, Slim. While I have immense respect for the 14th
Dalai Lama, and could imagine him saying some of these
things, some others are not of his mind.

Ok boys and girls, can we at least agree on something? For math challenged
folks like me there is a new video series to explain all the math
fundamentals I never could quite grasp in school. Is this a great leap
forward in education or what?

Robert, et al,

While we're posting lists and exposing false
attribution, why not go back to the grandaddy of them
all: the ten commandments. No problem with attribution
for that list.

*George W. Bush Meets Moses*

George W. Bush was walking through an airport last week, when he saw an old
man with white hair, a long white beard, wearing a long white robe and
holding a staff. He walked up to the man, who was staring at the ceiling,
and "Excuse me sir, aren't you Moses?"

The man stood perfectly still and continued to stare at the ceiling, saying
nothing. Again, George W. asked, a little louder this time, "Excuse me sir,
aren't you Moses?" Again, the old man stared at the ceiling motionless
without saying a word. George W. tried a third time, louder yet. "Excuse me
sir, aren't you Moses?" Again, no movement or words from the old man. He
continued to stare at the ceiling.

One of George W's aides asked him if there was a problem, and George W.
said, "Either this man is deaf or extremely rude. I have asked him three
times if he was Moses, and he has not answered me yet." To which the man,
still staring at the ceiling finally replied to the aide, "I can hear him
and yes, I am Moses, but the last time I spoke to a bush, I spent 40 years
wandering in the wilderness."

Bill,
As Ed has suggested, the tongue weight will depend on how you have your boat
loaded and how old your boat is. The most important thing is to HAVE some
tongue weight. I've seen things towed with little or no tongue weight just
waiting to pop off. But you will know when you hook your boat to your
vehicle if you have weight on the tongue or not. Just learn to load your
boat the same way every time. My motor and gas tanks come off the boat and
go into my truck. Some people leave theirs on the boat but when I tried
that, I couldn't get enough weight on the tongue. Really, what I've found
to be the key is correctly loading the boat on the trailer. Take note of
where the bow stripe lines up the bow stop on the trailer. Note where the
boat sits on the bunks and where the keel lines up with the trailer.
Duplicated those positions each time and you won't have any problems. I
towed my boat from St. Louis to SW Virginia when I bought it. Wasn't quite
enough tongue weight as I could only go about 60 without the trailer
swaying. So I drove the whole way at 60. Can't really adjust the boat on
the trailer on the highway. - rob

You can't adjust the boat on the trailer, but you can rearrange the weight
within the boat. Moving a hundred pounds to the V berth makes a lot of
difference.

Ok boys and girls, can we at least agree on something? For math
challenged
folks like me there is a new video series to explain all the math
fundamentals I never could quite grasp in school. Is this a great leap
forward in education or what?

I know that now! That was my first time towing a boat and I just wanted to
get it home, so I just drove slow. - rob

Blind man wanders into a biker bar by mistake. He finds his way to a bar
stool and orders a drink. After sitting there for a while, he yells to the
bartender, "Hey, you wanna hear a blonde joke?"

The bar immediately falls absolutely quiet. In a very deep, husky voice,
the woman next to him says, "Before you tell that joke, sir, I think it is
only fair -- given that you are blind -- that you should know five things:

1. The bartender is a blonde girl with a baseball bat.
2. The bouncer is a blonde girl.
3. I'm a 6 foot tall, 175 lb. blonde woman with a black belt in karate.
4. The woman sitting next to me is blonde and a professional weightlifter.
5. The lady to your right is blonde and a professional wrestler.

Now, think about it seriously, mister. Do you still wanna tell that joke?"

The blind man thinks for a second, shakes his head, and mutters, "Nah...not
if I'm gonna have to explain it five times."

Rob,

Keep a bottle jack in your tow vehicle.

To adjust the boat, put a piece of wood under the bottle jack, under the
keel. Put a piece of wood between the bottle jack and the keel.

Jack up the boat slightly to get the full weight off the bunks.

Move the trailer to the desired location while the boat remains
stationary, supported by the jack.

Lower the boat back onto the trailer.

Repeat until you get the boat just where you want it.

Bill Effros
