We use the Interlux ablative from West Marine at about $60 per gallon.  I
get two coats on the boat from one gallon and we've painted every other
year.  The boat sits in the fresh water lake all season except for an
occasional trip up north.  It always comes out in the fall looking great
except for a little paint we scuff off the bow landing on shore, which we do
quite often.  I never pressure wash it or sand or anything beforehand.  I
use jack stands to get it as high off the trailer as I can which also gives
you more room to work under the boat.
