Ben,

My experience has been that the main can put alot of lateral force on the boat, increasing the list. Like you, I like to maintain boom height in order to maintain boom clearance and be able to use my bimini as a UV barrier.  

I can have a good sail under genny alone and not invite the intrigues of a too-wet rail.  A smaller mailsail area reduces sailpower so little, so I have normally kept the main high, furled as prudent, maybe as much as 50% to maintain balance yet also reduce list, and used the genny as my driver.  I prefer to reduce my genny after I have reduced the main, then reduce boom height.  Thoughts?
