No, that's not me.  That's about 3 owners ago.

A fractional rig is when the headstay attaches to the mast below the 
masthead.  Apparently the standard R22 rig is a "masthead rig", with 
the headstay attached directly to the masthead.

Further research seems to indicate that a fractional rig is often 
used in racing setups.  It allows a large main to be used (in 
relationship to the jib) and drives the boat somewhat 
differently.  So, you often find it on a taller mast , using the same 
size headsails, but a larger main.  For example, read
