John,
	I do not recall you saying that you found the top piece to your vhf
antenna.  The following applies to both the transducers and antenna.

	Unless you are either or a ham radio operator who understands standing
waves and/or an electronic technician who knows how to measure resistance
and thru voltages, you should not wantonly connect different equipment. 
Those types of equipment are matched systems.  If you put in an unmatched
unit, you could destroy either the radio of fish finder console.  On the
base load, you do not necessarily put a 36” wire, but one that has
appropriate resistance for the base.  If you put a standing wave meter on
the system you could tell if you are within limits.  Hooking up a fish
finder console to any transducer could smoke the console or the transducer. 
Yes, people willie nilley hook up things, and usually after the smoke clears
the throw the stuff out, notwithstanding comments otherwise.
