Jack:
1.	I have lowered and raised the mast using Stan’s illustrious system over
water to change a light bulb.  Worked fine.
2.	Years ago somewhere on the east coast there used to be a Rhodie who had
the same issue you describe and he sailed with his crane on the foredeck
ready to go.  It may have been on the old sailnet list so there were never
any pictures of him doing so.  Yes it can be done, but it is a PITA.
3.               Somewhere in the recent past I have seen a Rhodie sailing
with his crane installed.  
4.               Maybe you can ask Stan to make a motorized version?
