Rory,
Why not just keep it simple.  A simple tarp over the boom would deflect much volume from any storm, allowing the smaller drains to be more effective while under less flowthru demands.  When you want to get a cruising/rain cover, as in boomroom you'll find it more durable and functional than tarp material.
When you want a dodger look-alike call Stan about a PTE.  The BR is built with a dodger in the front and does not require a PTE.
