[Rhodes22-list] Greek Sailing now a small question or two for Chris

Arrgh, Ed,
Me hates dem stinkin' motors! On the other hand it is really a love
hate relationship, because no matter how frustrating they are it is sooo
nice to have a working one on windless, hot, days. So, on the subject of a
response to your query: The motor that we finally found was a 2002 Yamaha
5.5hp internal and external tank, 2 stroke, assembled-in-France-by-Algerians
motor. The good thing was it still had the 50 hour service tag on it and
being a trade in and a long shaft in a short shaft world; it lay forgotten
in the back of the Marina shop until I found it and made an offer. The
problem turned out to several different things. When the mechanic who
finally fixed it, removed the thermostat, it was partially blocked up with
crud and he explained they are there for cold European waters not nice hot
Greek ones. He also found the spark plug was not the right one and the
filter was not functioning. I also had him put another filter inline as the
fuel in some of those marinas is quite dirty judging from the crap that was
accreted in the carburetor. When these were taken care of it generally ran
fine. The only other problem is it will occasionally pop out of gear; this
is, I think, a problem with the spring tension in the lower unit, something
I can take care of when/if I return next spring.

Chris,

Maybe somewhere in the previous fine print you may have told us, but what
kind of GPS were you using?

Was the motor two or four stroke? What was the problem, or at least what
was fixed that made it run?
