John,
Looked it up. Ours is an 11 3/4"  3 blade prop with 5 3/4 pitch.

I remember reading that rule of thumb too. The prop works well except 
when you have the rudder over towards the prop so that the thrust 
from the motor starts to negate the action of the rudder. We think 
the trick is to work in short bursts of power in maneuvers requiring 
that action - particularly in reverse.
