[Rhodes22-list] Question, non sailing--Now High Wind Tacking

Lee,

You've answered some of your own questions. Yes, you will turn faster with
the board down and besides, you said you were on a close reach when the
board should be down to prevent leeway. Although in higher winds you might
have the board up to stop you from heeling so much in the gusts. Try half
or two thirds of the board next time. Also the faster you go , the less
board you need and vice-versa. You can also use the board to adjust your
helm somewhat. Experiment and see what you come up with.

When tacking, don't throw the tiller too hard over. Ease it over smooth and
steady and there's no need to throw it all the way over. You want it to
steer the boat around, not put the breaks on.

When coming about upwind, I usually don't release the jib until I pass
through the eye of the wind and the jib is back-winding a little. That will
help to push the bow around faster. Then, with the jib full of air, when
you do finally release it, it will come across faster and less likely to get
hung up on its way across. This is especially helpful when you have the
whole 175 all out.

Hope this helps a little,

Slim
