John,

I think it was the U of Maryland that I heard was requiring the book but I
could be wrong. If so and your daughter went there as an ed major, chances
are good she read it.

My mom was an elementary public school teacher for many years. Third and
fourth grades, special ed and remedial reading specialist. Then she quit
all that and decided to open her own private school in Naples, Fla. The
book is about how the school came about from the ground up. She started
with just one pre-K class and each year, as the students graduated, she
built new classrooms, hired new teachers, developed new curriculum and now
the Seacrest Country Day School enrolls students from pre-K through 12th
grade. Mom's retired now but she still volunteers at Seacrest on a regular
basis. She's at her best working with small groups on their reading skills
but now loves the luxury of being just a volunteer and can say, "I'm tired.
That's all for today. See you tomorrow."

Speaking of tomorrow, she's going in to volunteer to help with the Halloween
parade which most teachers think is just about the worst day of the year in
terms of just general chaos. But again, when you're a volunteer and not
primarily responsible, it's actually fun. Or so she says.
