[Rhodes22-list] A Very Blustery Day!

The advantages of the big 175 is that in light air you can still keep the
boat moving, but in really light air it tends to hang like a big drape and
it's hard to tack. When you're going down wind it's almost like having a
spinnaker. The problems come when you're heavily reefed. First is the sail
shape, which can be remedied by adding a luff pad. The other problem is
when you reef a 175 way in, you get a big sausage roll at the luff which
inhibits a smooth air flow across the sail. If you're sailing in 15 to 20
knots of wind, the 135 will be much better than the 175. Particularly if
you're racing and every little bit helps. But if you're just pleasure
sailing I think the versatility of the 175 with a luff pad is still best.
