Yes, my wife used to sew very well.  Don't know where the machine is 
now... buried in a pile in the storage center I imagine.  But it can 
be found again in needed.

Are you going to suggest a backpacker's flap?  I had those on packs 
and stuff sacks with cinch closures.  Basically you just sew in a 
flap a little larger than the opening just inside the cinch 
cord.  Then when you cinch it up, the flap seals the opening.
