Something to consider:

If the straps are screwed or riveted to the mid-points of
the supports, there are two problems:  First, as has been
pointed out, there is less MA.  The second issue is the
probability of buckling -- when lateral force is applied to
the center of a beam, especially if the beam is
weakened with a hole at that point, it will have a greater
tendency to buckle than if the beam is only subject to
compression.

There may be a good reason to move the strap
attachment out to the end of the support rod.
