[Rhodes22-list] Sail Purchase

Dave,
We replaced our old sleeve variety 175 with a brand new sleeve variety from Lee Sails Hong Kong about 3 years ago, and since we had replaced the tube wire around the same time it was the cheapest alternative. All we had to do was give Lee the faded serial number on our old jib and they made up an identical one.
The 175 is a real pain when coming abut in light or flukey winds; we found it's always better to jibe when sailing single handed with a 175. 155 ought to be easier.

  Ron:

I've been asking myself the same type of questions for the last 3 years. I
have the 175 on an old GBI furler which has a groove for a luff tape. I
just ordered and received a brand new battened IMF main from GBI and during
the discussions with Stan, he was telling me that some of the old GBI
furlers were of the "sleeve" variety where the luff of the jib just fits
down over the foil and there is no groove. I've never seen one of these on
any boat, but I think I would spend the money to upgrade from that. On the
other hand, I like the GBI furler that I have now because it is simple and
fairly bullet-proof. I just replaced the forestay cable on it which was
easy to do and it should go for some more years. I don't know which you
  have.

The 175 is useful at times, but I am getting very close to needing to
replace mine and because I single-hand so much, I think I am going to
replace mine with a 155 with a tape which will fit my GBI furler and a foam
tape for sail shape. I have found it very useful to sheet in between the
shrouds when the wind gets up, but the sail shape is terrible on the 175 in
this situation. Where I live; when there is light or no wind, it is too hot
to sail anyway, so I don't think I'll miss it. Stan was also telling me
that GBI usually orders sails around the first of the year, so this might be
a good time to talk to him about ordering one for you. I am going to pull
my boat in a couple of weeks and see what I am looking at as far as paint
and new running rigging. etc. If I have any money left in this year's
budget, I may get him to order me a 155 with a foam tape. I think most of
the sailors on the list who have the 155 are hank ons and not furlers. I
think they are all very happy with its performance but maybe someone with a
furled 155 will post to the list and talk about it. I will be interested to
hear what you decide to do and the costs involved.

  Thanks,
  David Culp

Last summer the UV cover ripped away from my old 175 genoa. Having the
  older
GBI furler I could not change the sail without lowering the mast, which
  motivated
me to live with it through the season. My plan is to replace the GBI
  furler with
  the CDI furler this winter.

My question is which new genoa I should buy. The old 175 was heavy and
  did not
perform well in light winds. It lost a lot of shape when furled.
I bought a UPS sail a few years ago and that works for lighter wind days.
I also have a C-22 110 (? I am not really sure of this sail) with
a luff rope for the CDI so I can use that for high wind days although,
frankly I probably would not bother to change sails unless really necessary.

The question is whether I should go back to the 175 or go to a 155 ?
It seems to me that a 155 would furl more efficiently
than the 175, and on days where more sail is needed, I could use the UPS.

  any thoughts?

  Ron
