Dave,

There's a similar thing going on with the "evil" association in the
small airplane world. Garmin has taken over not just the GPS market
but the whole avionics market. You can't argue with the quality of
their product (I've got a Garmin 250XL Nav/Comm/GPS) but they
discontinue support for their older products after awhile and jack-up
the prices of the database. The info in the database has already been
paid for once (gubmint) but is packaged such that updates can only
come from Garmin. It's all legal and fair IMHO and there are other
vendors if it bothers someone that much. Where it really gets
interesting is how the Garmin corporation is structured. The legal
home base is in the Bahamas where all the intellectual property is
held. You pay for hardware manufactured all over the world, but Garmin
USA, Europe etc., has to pay for the intellectual property which isn't
taxed at our excessive US (compared to the rest of the world) rates.
Cute little tax dodge, huh?

Google sold their soul in China, now this. I'm not surprised really.
