[Rhodes22-list] How to go under a bridge

Robert,

A friend of mine here in Memphis, a tax attorney, and his friend, an MD,
took the good doctors J-34 from Pickwick down the Tom Bigbee to Florida a
few years ago. The original plan was to de-mast in Mobile and sail the rest
of the trip. They decided somewhere along the way that they were both smart
guys and remembered enough high school algebra to figure out how much heel
it would take to clear the last bridge, 52', in Mobile without de-masting.
Eleven degrees was the magic answer they computed. They hung the dink off
the boom, filled it with water, and bravely attacked the bridge. Their
calculations were perfect, BUT, they didn't consider the VHF antenna and
windvane. OOPS! It cost as much to make the repairs as it would have to
de-mast.
