[Rhodes22-list] What Should I Have Done Differently?

One of the things an experienced sailor taught me that I took to heart - 
Never remove your source of power until you've replaced it with another. 
That goes both ways. Don't kill the motor until at least one sail is up 
and full of wind, and don't drop your sails until the motor is in the 
water and running (unless you're sailing to a stop, of course).
