Because of the support and platform issues (like those you are having 
now).  Google, Yahoo, etc. do not have to worry about what OS or 
other software you are running.  Their software support costs are 
zilch and they only have to develop one code image - for their 
servers.  When there is an update or a bug fix, they just upload it 
to their servers.  No mailings, no CD production costs, no pesky 
customer calls because it won't load properly, etc.
