As an aside, W.E.B. DuBois held a Phd. from Harvard.  However, his point of
view was authoritarian elitest rather than democratic.  The following
comment ought to make the neo marxist on this forum happy:  In 1959, Du Bois
received the Lenin Peace Prize. In 1961, at the age of 93, he joined the
Communist Party USA.
