Matt
Stan knows more abouts The Rhodes ,,, than I ever will .. Saying
that , the GPS is a tool not a toy .Yes the Rudder and Center Board will
tell when you are in shallow water but that may be to late. I can tell you
a story about being pushed into a sand bar 3 miles from shore by 20 kts
winds and being rocked by 3 and 4 ft. waves but I don't think that's what
you want to here .
I have a Garmin 498 which has a very good chart of all of the Great
Lakes plus more from the factory , just plug it in . It takes about a min.
for the satellites to find me no mater If I'm on Lake Erie or on Tampa
Bay.Accurate to about 1ft .Also what the normal water depth is . That's
when the Sonar helps. The wind will lower the water table, sometimes, up to
2 ft in an hour on the western end of the lake .
Along with the GPS one tool you may think about is Stan's Mast Hoist
System . The Mast with the IMF and the 175 Furling. is very heavy and a
little hard to handle with 2 people.

 Good Luck Bill Davidge
