Matt:

Sometimes my replies can be little sharp, but then I have been around long
enough to know that to get some peoples attention you need an old fashion
wood baseball bat or wooden oar.

Matt said, "The question of PFDs bothers me, but I'll make sure I have
several Class II PFDs and I'll cover my family (i.e. my ass) with
automatically inflating PFDs for them. Any advice as to where to buy??

Where to buy has been already answered by one of the most senior and most
knowledgeable members of this forum. Since you are a rookie, learn the
significance of the different signatures attached to post to this forum.
The only addition to Michael’s recommendation that I would make is that
Defender usually offers a nice discount at boat shows.

Check out the differences in products out there with Mustang as to the one
to compare all others to. Ask why Mustang are made to U.S. Navy flyboy
specs. Also, the ordinary Life Vest might be purchased used from a little
room at the Plant. Throw the old dog a bone.

A few years ago, I could have told you the technical details of the
different GPS’s out there. Garmin is a hot name, but not the only name.
Sometimes the Hot Name is achieved more through advertising and product
placement. For example by paying off the big name in marine stores and
their catalogs and guaranteed profit margins may not translate to the
sailors best buy . Take the time to evaluate and compare some of the other
products out there. Magellan and Lowrance also make good products deserving
of your consideration.

Also, you said, “I'm not planning to trailer the boat (especially since I'm
a block away from Stan's factory and he said we could hide it there in the
event of a hurricane).” It takes a trailer to get it to Stan’s factory.
You have seen how big Stan’s operation is, are you willing to presume that
he will always have an extra trailer available? Leaving your boat at the
dock at the end of Midway Drive is not hurricane protection.

Besides, you need a trailer to take your boat to Captain Rummy for specific
sailing instruction and advanced sailing and drinking while sailing
techniques.
