I can tell you from experience. A small boat like a rhodes does not moter well in heavy seas. The stearn will come out of the water when cresting a big wave leaving the motor out of the water. I you plan to go out in heavy wx then make sure there is a protected cove you can SAIL to before you transition from sail to motor. My 5.5 would not even turn the boat into a steep chop one day, I had to turn back and raise the main and then sail out. another Bob > From: bandkrhodes22 at bellsouth.net> To: rhodes22-list at rhodes22.org> Date: Wed, 23 Jan 2008 03:16:27 +0000> Subject: [Rhodes22-list] Sail Vs Motor in WX> > Many times one makes better progress in WX under reduced sail as opposed to attempting to motor.> > Bob > > -------------- Original message from Just bent <j.bulfer at jbtek.com>: -------------- > > > > > > Chris, > > I have not been sailing long but I have been out in some big weather in my > > R22, (on a lake) and the one thing that was a problem for me was the motor > > hanging off the back of the boat.
