[Rhodes22-list] Naples, Maine - Swing Bridge - Urgent

Per an article in the Portland Press Herald this morning,

http://pressherald.mainetoday.com/story.php?id=166040&ac=PHnws

the swing bridge in Naples, Maine that allows passage
between Sebago Lake and Long Lake may be replaced with a
fixed span to save money, per Maine Department Of
Transportation.

As it stands, boats up to 90 feet and taller than 12 feet
(including the Songo Queen) can travel from Harrison south
to Sebago Lake village -- a distance of more than 25 miles,
comparable to the 30 miles from Seboomook south to Greenville
on Moosehead lake. Removing the swing bridge at Naples would
halve that.

This would prevent any sailboats with masts more than 12'
high from passing between the lakes but allow most power
boats to migrate freely.

In a time when both polution issues and gas prices point
toward wind powered boats, this is a rather questionable move.

I hope you can attend the hearing tonight at 7:00 PM at the
Songo Locks School.

The school is located on Songo School Road which runs to the
west off Rt 302 about 3 miles south of the existing Naples
bridge.
