Mike
Not sure if I'm the Bill you are talking to ? But here goes.

I have a Tohatsu 8hp . No problem with it on Lake Erie were, I sail 3 or 4 times a wk.. I have been out in heavy seas ( 4 and 5 ft waves and wind guesting to 25 kt ). what else can I say .
I looked at the Yamaha T 8 and T 9 There were two things that turned Me off of the T8 and T 9 .The price and they only come with Electric start To me that was a big problem .What are you going to do when you are 4 or 5 miles out, in heavy seas high winds and your battery is shot ?
Last yr I paid 1705 that included Tax and Shipping .Ck out internetoutboards.com..

Mike if you and your Admiral are ever going to be in the Toledo Oh area .Let me know and we can get together for a sail.

  Bill Davidge

Bill,

My Admiral and I are also working on outfitting a soon to be recycled Rhodes
(a 1993). Mind if I ask where you got your 8 hp Yamaha? I assume it's the
T8ELH. Best I've found so far is a place just north of Edenton in VA called
Ed's Marine Superstore. I haven't talked to them yet, but the price they
list on their Web page was pretty good on the T8ELH and not bad on the newer
T9.9ELH which I'm also considering (for the extra power at about the same
weight).

For those with 8 hp motors on their Rhodes .... ever wish you had +1.9 hp
more? We'll be sailing mostly Ohio inland lakes and Lake Erie with
occasional sojourns further afield. I'm not at all concerned about using 8
hp on the inland lakes, but Lake Erie can be indistinguishable from the sea
in terms of wind and waves at times.
