That's a smart kid.  I was taught the "pants flotation" trick in 
scouts many years ago.  Tie the legs together, then whip the top over 
you head and down into the water, filling the legs with air.  Works 
surprisingly well and obviously helped this guy.  Although it sounds 
like he was lucky to have his pants with him!
