[Rhodes22-list] Political question.

Elle,

You guys haven't solved this yet? I went back to the hangar yesterday
afternoon to piddle (and got a ride in a SR-22, fast-as-hell plastic
airplane).

Nixon probably was a watershed, the election of 2000 and the aftermath was
perhaps a bigger one as far as polarization in politics goes. Al Gore could
have spared us that by carrying his home state of Tennessee, or by following
Nixon's example of 1960 by conceding an election he probably won (but for
some dead people voting in Chicago), but it all worked out for the best, Big
Al is now saving the world.

First the good news, the federal government is so huge and so cumbersome
that the entrenched bureaucrats in every department pretty much go about
business as usual regardless of who is the POTUS. Now for the bad news, the
federal government is so huge and so cumbersome that the entrenched
bureaucrats in every department pretty much go about business as usual
regardless of who is the POTUS.

What I fear most is a substantial shift leftward just as Europe is moving
right in their economic policies, and the Asian economies are pursuing
wide-open capitalism at breakneck speed. If you believe Amity Scales "The
Forgotten Man", FDR's programs actually lengthened the Great Depression, but
many of those programs are still with us. Johnson's Great Society programs
are still with us, including what must be a record number for any city,
hundreds of shuttered public housing projects here in Memphis (this months
Atlantic has a great article about how section 8 housing has moved crime
into otherwise stable neighborhoods). These programs never end. The offer
still stands for anyone wanting a tour of the MS Gulf Coast to watch your
tax dollars at work (and in the interest of full disclosure, we did in fact
earn $2400 from the feds collecting dead chickens off the beach. Every
thing we've done since has been private work).

Now, you might convince me to vote for the Chicago Savior if someone,
anyone, could point out one successful project he's accomplished in the last
two decades. Anything will do. Just one.

I'm still waiting.

Brad
