Esther,
I think some of the early Rhodes may have used a pigtail to a 
backstay but most R22s have a topping lift that runs from the boom 
through a masthead sheave, back down the mast to a turning block at 
the base of the mast, on the cabin top or on a handrail and back to a 
cleat on the cabin top easily reached from the cockpit. If your 
Rhodes has a conventional main and jib, both with halyards, you may 
need to rig a block to the side of the mast or the masthead fitting.
