On my boat there is a topping lift, a line running from the masthead
back to the end of the boom. on the end of the boom is essentially a
chainplate, to which the topping lift attaches with a snap shackle.

Now, I should mention that mine is not a standard setup. I don't
have IMF, but my boom is rigged for roller furling. So, the topping
lift comes down to a chainplate which is attached to a loose pin
sticking out of the end of the boom. When I need to reef, I take up
the slack in the topping lift to support the boom. Loosen the main
halyard and roll the boom about 4 turns, wrapping the main around
it. The boom revolves around the gooseneck pin at the mast and the
topping-lift supported pin at the other end. Then I slack the
topping lift and sail on.

Photos might be a big help. I'll try to get some online soon.

Cheers!
