Those pictures turned out perfect.  If someone wants to duplicate, I think 5/8" or even 1/2" plyboard would work, 4" thick foam on top and covered with fabric.  If the wood were cut to match the v-berth taper, It would fit squarely atop the berth when not in use.

I have used the v-berth for storage in the past, but bought three of the 11 gal Rubbermaid bins that Dave Bradley suggested a year ago, and stow under the cockpit seats, a perfect fit just like he reported.
