Also, some handhelds have an external antenna port (or use a standard 
connector for their whips), so you could plug them in to a masthead 
antenna if you needed some extra range.  However, FCC regs limit 
handhelds to 6-watts of transmit power while fixed-mounts can be up 
to 25 watts.  So, you're never going to get the same range from a handheld.
