Ed,

Those words were written by Rev. J.H. Boetcker, a German immigrant to
the US and are often mistakenly attributed to Abraham Lincoln.

My job for the near term is to console my wife and convince her things
are not as bad as they seem and that we're a resilient nation. Our
history has been one of tacking one way and just as quickly tacking
the other.  It won't be an easy sell to someone from a family that
suffered through one Cultural Revolution and now feels like she's
facing another. In an effort to lift her spirits I quoted Chairman
Mao, "it's always darkest before dawn, then it's completely black".

On second thought, maybe that wasn't the best choice of words.
