When I chartered the 3800, the largest boat I could put on my resume was a 32 mono.  During the reservation process, they said I would need a "friendly skipper" for a day.  But the people managing the dock were only concerned with casting me off.  I insisted that I have a skipper even if for only a little while.  They drummed someone up, but were clearly annoyed.  Having the skipper for an hour was definitely helpful.  Within a few minutes, he showed me how to best maneuver using the engines, especially when approaching a mooring ball.  After that, we were on our way.

Ben,
Well, for me to "qualify", I filled in an on-line form:

http://www.moorings.com/Chartering/newtochartering/HowDoIQualify.aspx

Within an hour, I got an email back saying I was approved for up to a 41
footer. As Dana indicated, they are in the business of renting boats
and I expect you could talk them into almost anything. - rob

What does it mean to be "qualified?" I did a Moorings charter in the
BVIs
-- a single hull beneteau in the 42' range, I think. If I remember
correctly, the qualification check was something like this:

Woman at desk: You know how to sail?

Me: Uh, yes.

Woman: Then bring it back in one piece, mon.
