John,

"Unless you have walked a mile in that persons' shoes you have
absolutely no idea of what had transpired in that persons' life to put
them in that situation."

Thank you. That is the mindset of my father and an adage I grew-up
with in a small town. My wife and daughter and I visited that small
town for a couple of days last month (and a couple of days is more
than enough for me) and things haven't changed much. People who are
down on their luck still come by Louis and Bonnie's house for a meal,
to borrow 20 bucks, sometimes advice, but usually just the 20 bucks.
We went by the local bank on the way out of town and threw a check in
the night depository, no explanation or directions needed, they'll
look at the name on the check and it will hit the appropriate account.
Some of that money will go towards the winter gas bill and some will
be "loaned" out $20 at a time, never to be repaid. Before I-40 was
built and US 40 was still the main artery East-West through the middle
of the country, there was never a shortage of travellers who broke
down in our little village of 630 people. Mom would feed'em and Dad
would patch-up their car and I never did quite understand what all the
fuss was about while we we're freezing our asses off because it was
winter and construction employees are unemployed through the winter.

Be careful of labels and harsh judgments. One of the benefits of
having visited a plethora of third-world countries is that you learn a
smile is a smile, a good meal is a good meal, and we don't have but 3%
difference in our DNA at the max reference point.

"Judge not lest ye be judged".

Brad
