Bill,

I have a couple of questions:

    1. How far and fast must one drift on the LIS so that "nobody could find
        them."  You were able to find them and rescue them.  This 
information
        might be invaluable to the contraband dealers surely lurking on the 
list.

    2. Why can't a power boat "heave-to"?  According to the CG course,
        "A power vessel may heave-to by turning into the seas and applying
         sufficient power to maintain position."  Now, the real question, 
"Who
        tosses the line when ordered to heave-to for boarding?"

OK, now on to a more meaningful exercise.

I carry 200' of 3/8" nylon rode attached to about 6' of 1/4" chain for use 
with my Danforth (#13, now called an S920) on the bow and a similar rode for 
my Danforth (#15, now an S1300) on the stern rail.  Much more line is very 
difficult to store in a handy fashion (anchor locker & mesh bag on stern 
rail.)  This should give me very good holding power in nearly 30' of water 
(7:1 scope) and fair weather anchoring in 40' of water (5:1 scope.)  I have 
had very few problems setting the Danforth with this rig since most of the 
LIS bottom is sand and I typically anchor in 25 to 30 ft, taking into 
account 8' tidal changes.

I have an additional 400' of 3/8" nylon with thimbles and shackles on both 
ends in the laz for unknown situations and it could be quickly added to an 
anchor rode for a deep water situation.  I still would ONLY have 600' of 
line, thus not be able to properly anchor in 100' of water, let alone 200' 
(middle of the Sound!)  While I would definitely not plan to overnight in 
the NY shipping lanes, I suppose it is possible to run into an emergency in 
deep water that might require setting an anchor.

How much line should we be carrying?  How much do you have "at the ready?"
